Childhood Hunger | Kids Cafe
Of the more than 23 million emergency food recipients served by America's Second Harvest more than 9 million are children. Throughout the Northland (Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin):
  • 41% of food shelf clients are children
  • 38% of soup kitchen/shelter clients are children
Hunger can be devastating - especially among children. Hunger and under-nutrition contribute to infant mortality, growth stunting, iron deficiency and anemia. Hungry children are less likely to interact with others, explore, or learn at a very early age. School-aged children who are hungry have difficulty concentrating and don't perform as well as others. Emotionally, hunger and insecurity can result in anxiety, negative feeling about self-worth, and hostility toward the outside world - a problem having lasting impact in the Northland.

Although childhood hunger is a severe domestic issue - it is a solvable one as well.

In our region, over 71 non-profit programs provide regular snacks and/or meals to in-need children including our own Kids Cafe. Located at Damiano of Duluth, in Duluth's Central Hillside community, Kids Cafe feeds "hot meals to hungry kids" while at the same time providing nutrition education activities in a fun nurturing environment more.
