What is Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank?

A:

Founded in 1984, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is the region’s only food bank and exists to rescue nationally and regionally donated food for distribution to non-profit agencies (food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters, senior nutrition sites and programs for youth) and to people in need.

Our food bank rescues over 5 million pounds per year – enough food for 4 million meals – providing it to 120 non-profit agencies and over 44,000 people in need throughout NE Minnesota (St. Louis, Carlton, Lake and Cook counties) and NW Wisconsin (Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron counties).

Q:

Where is the Food Bank located?

A:

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is located in the center of its 8-county service region in Duluth. Address is: Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, 4503 Airpark Boulevard, Duluth, MN 55811. For more information on how to contact us, click here.

Q:

How does the Food Bank help hungry Northland residents?

A:

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank provides its food to a network of 120 non-profit agencies located throughout NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin. We also provide food directly to in-need individuals and families through our on-site food shelf, Mobile Food Pantry distributions and our Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS).

Q:

How does the Food Bank get food?

A:

National and regional manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and growers donate food and non-food items to Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. These products include packaged, canned, perishable and non-perishable food that meet all food safety standards.

Our food bank also receives and distributes USDA commodities to NE Minnesota non-profit agencies and residents in need.

Q:

How much food is rescued and distributed?

A:

On average, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank rescues and distributes 5 million pounds of food annually – which is the equivalent of 4 million meals for our region’s hungry.

Q:

Can the hungry get food directly from the Food Bank?

A:

Yes. Eligible seniors who are residents of NE Minnesota may qualify for our Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS). Residents of Hermantown and communities north, may participate in our Hermantown Area Food Shelf operating Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Families may also be able to participate in our direct service produce distributions if they are associated with one of our member agencies.

Q:

Does the Food Bank sell food?

A:

Our Food Bank does not and cannot sell donated food. In addition, our member agencies are prohibited from selling food intended for those in need. Our member agencies do contribute a small shared maintenance fee to cover operational costs; the rate (typically $.06 or $.07) is charged by the pound. Ground beef at such a low fee is always embraced by our non-profit members!

In addition, our Food Bank offers a separate wholesale program to supplement the items that are provided from the donated food and government programs. Through our wholesale purchase program agencies can purchase food items in order to serve well-balanced, nutritious meals.

Q:

Is food safety important to the Food Bank?

A:

Our Food Bank takes food safety very seriously. We employ ServSafe® staff and have one member who is trained to train and certify our member agencies. Our food product is processed through a computerized inventory system tracking it from donor to agency or recipient. We are inspected by Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest ) and licensed and inspected by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
